Welcome to Reception
Teaching Staff Reception
Teaching Assistants Reception
In Reception we learn through a mixture of child initiated play and child and adult led activities. The children explore two large classrooms, the Reception playground and a covered area benefiting from new playground equipment. We operate a friendly, caring and supportive setting where children’s Personal, Social and Emotional wellbeing is developed and each child is given the best opportunity to achieve their full potential. Whilst the overall termly topics are set, much of the focus and content is decided upon by the children’s own fascinations and ideas.
Long ago and far away In the Autumn term, we learn all about dinosaurs and prehistoric life; castles; dragons; and fairy tales. Our focus author is Julia Donaldson and we enjoy sharing a range of her books including Cave Baby, Zog, and Room on the Broom. We enjoy lots of pretend play, including home and doctors role play corners, small world, and mud pie kitchen. Children are encouraged to select their own resources to further their learning. We also celebrate festivals and traditions such as Harvest, Bonfire Night, Diwali and Christmas. The children are given lots of time to explore their new environment and settle into school life, making new friends and sharing new experiences.
Within our Spring Term topic, Around the World in 80 Days we discover the traditions, language, food and music of different countries and continents such as Africa, France, Italy and China.
In the Summer Term our Commotion in the Ocean topic allows us to explore creatures that live underwater, fantasy sea creatures and beach holidays.
Through all of our curriculum, we teach pupils British values and how to celebrate diversity. We aim to raise their awareness of radicalisation and extremist views, whatever the source. We have adopted the principles and advice found in ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education 2016’ and the 2015 ‘Prevent duty’.
These are incorporated into our school policy on tackling extremism.
