Welcome to Year 2
Hi, Ho, Hi Ho, it’s off to work we go!
In the Autumn Term, we learn all about coal mining in our local area. We visit Cannock Chase Museum, the Mining Memorial in Hednesford and walk back across the skelly where the coal mines used to be. We then visit Apedale Heritage Centre to experience what it is like down an actual coal mine. We have a pretend mine in our classroom and a Pit Check board to check ourselves into class! We read, study and write traditional stories and playscripts, make puppets and perform our own shows.
A Whole New World!
In the Spring Term we learn all about animation. We learn about the history of animation and produce our own animations using models, Claymation and Ipads. We learn all about the history of Walt Disney and where resorts are across the world. We use different animation films to learn about the continents in which they are set. We read, study and write our own Mr Men and Little Miss books which we read to Year 1.
All at Sea!
In the Summer Term, we learn all about sea rescue and the RNLI. We have an RNLI pager in the classroom so every time there is a “shout” during the day, we can find out where it is, which lifeboats they have and what happened. We carry out a sponsored row to raise money for the RNLI then we visit the station at Blackpool to present it to them. We write letters and emails to children at a school in Blackpool and visit them on our trip. We read, study and write Lighthouse Keeper stories and write beach safety leaflets to give to Year 1.
Through all of our curriculum, we teach pupils British values and how to celebrate diversity. We aim to raise their awareness of radicalisation and extremist views, whatever the source. We have adopted the principles and advice found in ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education 2016’ and the 2015 ‘Prevent duty’.
These are incorporated into our school policy on tackling extremism.
