Welcome to Year 5
Teaching Staff Year Five
Teaching Assistant Year Five
In Year 5 we have three fascinating curriculum themes…
The year begins with 'Exploring Beyond the Limits' where we find out about various explorers from the past who have challenged the boundaries of what can be achieved and where humans can visit and survive. During the second part of the autumn term we learn all about the Earth and Space. We discuss whether it is right to spend so much money on Space exploration and tourism or if this money should be put to a different use. In addition to this we visit the National Space Centre to support the children's learning.
In the spring term we switch our focus to South America. Our topic is entitled, ‘The Riches of the Americas’. We will study the Mayan civilization, the rainforest, and creatures that inhabit it. In addition to this we begin to look at the importance of the rainforest to our planet and pose ecological questions about its destruction.
During the summer term much of our work is about natural disasters. During our topic, ‘A Force to be Reckoned With’ we look at a variety of natural disasters from modern day back to ancient times. This builds on children’s understanding of how the planet is changing and what we can do to help protect it. Throughout the topic there is an element of enterprise where we raise money in conjunction with Shelterbox.
Pupils will learn a great deal about how much we can achieve if we work together collectively and how this can benefit everyone - lessons that will serve them well as they develop their own ability to learn.
Through all of our curriculum, we teach pupils British values and how to celebrate diversity. We aim to raise their awareness of radicalisation and extremist views, whatever the source. We have adopted the principles and advice found in ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education 2016’ and the 2015 ‘Prevent duty’.
These are incorporated into our school policy on tackling extremism.
