Welcome to Year 1
Teaching Staff Year 1
Year One is an exciting and fascinating place to be!
In Autumn, our topic is ‘Global Gardens with Percy’. We explore our wonderful world through wildlife and plants and grow our own flowers and vegetables in the school garden. We read and share Nick Butterworth stories to find out more about Percy’s adventures and receive a visit from a park keeper. Children have the chance to create outdoor sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy and Cannock Chase collages in the style of Matisse. We also work as a team to make Bug Cities and have a very special visit from the animal man!
Our Spring topic is ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’ where children explore the changes to the Royal Mail and our royal family over time. We share traditional tales from ‘The Jolly Postman’ before receiving a visit from our local postman. Our classrooms will be a delivery hub for the children as they receive postcards from around the world. We design and create gifts which we send to Queen Elizabeth alongside letters explaining about our wonderful year.
In Summer, things get ‘Hot, Hot, Hot!’ as we step back in time to 1666 to explore the Great Fire of London. We create our own City of London and watch as the unfortunate events unfold. Children then work as a team to rebuild modern day London exploring the changes to buildings and fire safety procedures. We plan and carry out a fire drill with the support of Miss Tonkinson and Mr Proctor and ensure everyone in school knows how to keep safe.
Through all of our curriculum, we teach pupils British values and how to celebrate diversity. We aim to raise their awareness of radicalisation and extremist views, whatever the source. We have adopted the principles and advice found in ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education 2016’ and the 2015 ‘Prevent duty’.
These are incorporated into our school policy on tackling extremism.
